Happy Father’s Day
His name is Al (or Albert) and he has a ponytail and he’d give you the shirt off his back. He’s my dad. He grew up without a dad and I know that played a huge role in the reason he desires to be such a part of his kids’ lives. Not only is he an amazing dad, he’s an amazing grandfather and our children are so blessed.
Many of my childhood memories involved time spent with my dad on the farm. At one point we lived on a huge cattle and sheep ranch. I would go out with dad and the other guys…although I don’t quite remember what we were going to do. All I remember is riding a horse and feeling so cool to be able to be with the adults. Like I was helping or something.
And then a few years later we had our own sheep farm and I have so many memories of working the sheep with my dad. During the lambing season I was often the one called on to help pull lambs when the mama couldn’t have the lamb on her own. Sounds gross but I thought it was the coolest thing in the world. We did everything as a family. Sheared the sheep, gave their shots, cut off tails, castrated… you name it. And dad was always there to yell at the sheep when they got out of line. We often tease him now that’s how we learned how to swear because he got so mad at those sheep so often!
And then there’s the painting. My dad is an amazing painter and drywaller. Because of this every time any of us kids now walk into a new house or room we immediately look at the ceiling to see how well it was painted. It’s a sickness, really.
I could go on and on about the great memories and I’m so very thankful to have these. I know that even though we may have had some real tough times growing up I am blessed beyond measure to have these memories to share with my children and my children’s children.
There are many quirky things about dad I could tell you about. I already mentioned he has a ponytail. He looks like Jesus when his hair is down!
I knew he was obsessed with toothpicks, he always has one in his mouth. But I just found out last weekend at our family reunion that we even sleeps with a toothpick. That’s talent! He’s about as obsessed with Jeeps as my Hubby is. Now, that’s a sickness!
But more than any of that dad is a kind, caring and loving man of integrity. He is always there for us no matter what. And he would do anything for us when we are in need. He’s proven that to us time and time again. And not only for us kids and mom but for his friends and family and even for those he doesn’t know. Maybe it’s not a coincidence he looks like Jesus – he sure acts like him!
Dad, thanks for everything. I can’t say enough how much we appreciate you. We love you so much and are so thankful to have you in our life. Thank you for loving Belle and Princess so much! They are so blessed. Have a great Father’s Day and we pray for many many more!
p.s. I would be remiss to not mention my Dad’s partner in Jeep crime, my amazing husband. Happy Father’s Day to you too Hubby. You are the best and me and the kids are so very blessed! We love you!
